Hello, fans and friends – thanks for checking out the Feb. 21 edition of Nellis-Creech AFB Desert Lightning News! This week, we bring you a look at the storied history of Creech AFB’s 42nd Attack Squadron. The Squadron, whose primary mission was the operation of the MQ-9 Reaper, has ended combat operations and been placed in dormant status. The history of the 42nd ATKS dates back to 1917, when it was originally activated as the 42nd Aero Squadron. “It was not an easy decision to place the squadron in a dormant status,” said Col. Stephen Jones, 432nd WG/432nd Air Expeditionary Wing commander, “however, doing so will help our community better prepare our remotely piloted weapons systems to thrive in the contested environments of the future.” We expect this is just the end of a chapter in the story of this versatile squadron, and its next incarnation will once again serve a vital role in the Air Force mission.
